Assignment 3.00 - Typography, Text & Visual Messages
Typography is more than just a cool font. It's the complete visual aesthetics of any written word. From the arrangement of your words to the spacing and more, there is so much to learn about the wonderful world of typography.
In this section I would like to change things up a little bit. I would like YOU to do a bit of inquiry based research to learn about the concept of typography, text and visual messages.
ALL research should begin with questions. Research questions help guide and focus the process to make it more effective.
Purpose: To learn about the significance of typography, text and visual messages in the context of visual communications.
Process: Research the topic using the guiding questions below as well as any of your own guiding research questions.
Product: Student choice of some visual product. Suggested: Slide presentation, prezi, Google Doc, etc. Your finished product should contain a mixture of visual examples and written explanations.
Submit your research findings with visual examples of what you learned.
Remember, research goes beyond just finding some quick text-based information modes. Search for videos on YouTube, look to websites, etc. In other words, diversify your research sources and modes.

- What are some common terms of typography? (hint: cap-line, top-line, mid-line, baseline. beard-line, serif, san serif, ascender, descender, bowl, counter...are there even more?)
- How do the ideas and use of the elements and principles of design help create purposeful text?
- How do the elements and principles of design along with typography and white space all work together to form a pleasing image?
- What are some of the biggest mistakes people make in relation to typography, text-type, and visual messaging?
- Can you think of other guiding questions to help you learn more about typography and text-type and visual messaging?
HOW TO START -
- Review the guiding research questions below.
- Add some of your own questions (these might emerge as you get into the research process and discover a lot of information that you want to include in your final product.
- Gather your research. Remember to also keep track of your sources, so you can make a bibliography.
- Learn.
- Decide what presentation or final product format you would like to use to present your findings and what you think is the most important information to demonstrate your understanding of typography, text and visual messages.
- Create your presentation.
- Record you giving your presentation. (desktop video or however you think you can do this best)
- Submit the research questions you used to create your presentation in a google doc.
- Submit your presentation link.
- Submit the recording link of your recorded presentation.
